MUSGROVE CONFERENCES provide the opportunity for a small group of participants to engage in open discussion and stimulating debate on timely and pivotal issues. Each year grant funds are allocated for a selected organization to convene a conference at Musgrove, the private retreat of the Bagley family. Invited grant applications must be submitted during the two annual grant cycles, although the conference may be held at any time during the year.

Musgrove St. Simons Island, Georgia Overlooking a picturesque, state-protected, salt marsh, Musgrove is a 600-acre estate on the banks of historic Village Creek, and is the part-time home of Elizabeth and Smith Bagley. When it is not being used for family gatherings, Musgrove serves as a creative retreat for policy-makers, influential thinkers, and progressive activists from around the world. President Jimmy Carter held his first pre-inaugural Cabinet meeting in the seclusion of Musgrove. |
Community organizers, environmental activists, journalists, senators, ambassadors, and secretaries of state have come to Musgrove to debate, reflect, plan and renew their spirits.
Musgrove had its
beginnings in 1938 when Nancy and Henry Bagley purchased the original
tract of land along the banks of Village Creek. Committed to preserving
the natural integrity of the estate, Mr. and Mrs. Bagley built a
compound of cottages. Six separate houses accommodate family and guests
at Musgrove. The largest building on the grounds, the Grove House, is a
spacious, two storied recreation room, and is an ideal place for
seminars. From campaign finance reform to poultry worker organizing to
international relations to launching of new electoral reform and youth
organizations, Musgrove has served as the setting for activists and
intellectuals to reflect and prepare to act. The Musgrove facility is available by invitation of the Sapelo Foundation only. Invited grant applications must be submitted during the two annual grant cycles although the conference may be held at any time during the year.
